Music from Seisenburg Castle
Mozart Terzetti K. 439b

The story of Mozart’s original composition for basset horn trio, K. 439b, includes the loss of the manuscript, consequent change of instrumentation, and reordering of movements in prints of Breitkopf & Härtel (1803) and Nicolaus Simrock (1812). The so-called Seisenburg manuscript (c. 1790) does not contain these modifications. It indicates the original basset horn version under the name Terzetti with the original order of movements. A grouping into four terzetti outlines Mozart’s compositional idea of K. 439b with four introductory and final movements, which were probably first performed by the brothers Anton and Johann Stadler with “Mr. Griesbacher”. It is presented in this form on historical basset horns by the Lotz Trio on the recording: Music from Seisenburg Castle.
